Fruit first fibre makes the perfect ‘better for you’-inclusion

Paradise Fruits Solutions looks at how high fibre fruit inclusions are helping manufacturers to create functional foods that meet the needs of health-conscious consumers.

A regular intake of fibre in our diet has many health benefits.

It keeps us fuller for longer, aids digestion, can lower our cholesterol and can support weight management. Eating plenty of fibre is also associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.  As part of a healthy balanced diet it is recommended that we should be aiming to eat around 30g of the macronutrient per day, however according to World Health Organisation, many adults are only eating an average of about 18g daily.

It is no wonder then that health-conscious shoppers are looking for easier ways to increase the level of fibre they eat. Cereals, snacks that are higher in fibre through a mix of ingredients and recognisable flavours, including cereals and popular fruits such as strawberry, apple, cherry and raspberry, are becoming increasingly attractive.

Products such as grain bars, cereal bars, chocolate and fruit based trail mixes, ready to eat cereal pots and snack packs and bars, are not only perceived as having a ‘health halo’ and catering to the consumer’s dietary needs, but they are also enjoyable ‘on the go’ or as a healthier treat between meals, increasing their appeal even more.

That’s because, as people’s eating behaviours continue to change, they are leaning towards two types of snack foods; those that are both beneficial to their health but also offer some indulgence or support their increasingly busy lifestyles. As such, being able to purchase ‘better for you’ foods that provide nutritional benefits at the same time as offering a treat occasion or that can be picked up and eaten on the move, is becoming very important.

As a result, we are seeing a noticeable increase in manufacturers looking for ingredients that cater to the need for more fibre in the diet, especially as currently the daily intake of dietary fibre is still too low in the general population. Fruit based inclusions are the ideal solution and our Fruit First Fibre recipe can help. The recipe, which is suitable for use in a number of applications, from cereals and baked goods to confectionery and even stand-alone snacks, contains 43.9g of fibre per 100g and less than 40% sugar (naturally occurring) than standard fruit ingredients.
